What is an Apostille, and Why Do You Need One?

Definition

An apostille is essentially an international stamp of authentication. It verifies that a document is genuine and can be used in countries that are members of the Hague Convention.

Purpose

When you need to use documents (like birth certificates, diplomas, or business papers) in another country, that country may require them to be apostilled to confirm their authenticity.

Examples

If you're planning to work, study, get married, or conduct business overseas, you'll likely need an apostille for certain documents.

Common Documents We Apostille:

Birth Certificates

Power of Attorney

Marriage Certificates

Real Estate Documents

Corporate Documents

Death Certificates

How It Works:
Every document that requires an apostille must be notarized in Washington State before processing. This applies whether:

  • The document itself is notarized, or

  • You provide a certified copy of the original.

If your document is not yet notarized or certified, we can assist with that in-store for $20 per notarization or certified copy (or $35 for POAs or other trust documents).

Please note: Poppin Notary is not responsible for any issues arising from documents that were notarized elsewhere. Errors or incomplete notarizations from other providers may delay or prevent apostille processing. We recommend having documents notarized by us to avoid issues.
